1. The staff must make sure to not use the equipment without proper inspection

The worker must make sure not to put on the fall safety equipment without proper inspection of the working condition. Sometimes, regular usage of equipment can lead to the generation of some issues over time. The team must provide a proper guideline for inspection and determination if the harness and other equipment are damaged or not for the safer use of fall protection equipment.

2. Do make sure to conduct a buddy check while putting on the safety harness

The employee must make sure to use the safety harness which is a proper fit for them and must be properly worn according to the regulation. Most of the problems occur due to twisted straps which prevent the harness protection not working properly. Buddy check means that your co-worker can double-check all the straps attached are straight and secure All the buckles, clasps and various other connections must be double-checked.

3. Avoid wearing equipment that does not fit you properly

Ensure that the fall protection equipment worn is comfortably worn & is properly fitting. It can result in serious injury if improperly worn. The improperly fitted harness can cause the workers to be severely hurt whereas wearing it too tightly can stop the circulation of blood moving around the body. The worker must be aware of the correct way to wear the harness and make them aware of the dangerous issues of not wearing harnesses. Awareness about being protected or being exposed to danger must be stated properly.

4. Remember to attach the harness or other devices using the appropriate anchor

Training sessions must be held for the workers to make them aware of the procedure to use an anchor and its safety factor. Moreover, starting from the installation process, a qualified person must highlight factors such as arresting the force of a fall and preventing the workers from active falls through a properly installed protection system. Remember that the anchor must always be overhead and fall clearance distance is maintained.

5. Make sure to remember not to store the protection devices such as harnesses and other equipment outside

The workers must not store all the protective gear such as harnesses outside. They should be cleaned and carefully inspected to store somewhere cool and dry place after usage. Exposure to continued sunlight can result in damage to the equipment and the life span of the equipment gets shortened. Proper care of the equipment must be done for the safety of the equipment and must be done regularly.

6. Ensure to use correct and properly working equipment for the job

The best protection for the employee is to offer layers of protection to the employee. It is always nice to indicate extra steps to the employee for their safety. This also increases a bridge of trust between the manager and the worker and increases the confidence while working and can instantly report all the hazards that can happen commonly. The horizontal lifeline system can act as an active as well as passive fall protection. For perfect safety, minute details must be taken into consideration such as the length of the lanyard, types of ropes used, and the right configuration for the fall arrester horizontal lifeline system.

7. Never allow the workers to work without using the appropriate safety equipment

Even if the job of the worker is simple or short, the manager must never let the worker do their job without the appropriate fall protection equipment. The employee must wear a safety harness, open area is covered by a guard rail, be connected to a self-retracting lifeline or any other required safety equipment.

8. The workers must ensure that:

Every single component of the safety harness has its specific requirements which must be met for their protection. The workers must make sure that all the components such as snap hooks, connectors, D-rings, and various other factors must be cross-checked for safety while supporting the minimum force and weight required.

9. Fall protection training

All the newcomers and even the employee who have joined earlier must get fall protection training from time to time to get themselves reminded of what to do and what not to do. Failing to follow the protocol can be life-threatening. We would recommend a fixed schedule for the training by the experienced supervisor.

10. Do not use Ladders or step ladders for heavy and strenuous tasks

One thing all the workers must remember is that the ladders and step ladders must be only used when the task is light and can be quickly done. If the task is to perform while lifting heavy items, a proper safety harness must be worn. The ladders can only carry weight up to a certain limit and the limitations must be taken into consideration.

For all the workers putting their life in danger to do their job properly, the manager in the industry must ensure that they are provided with the right equipment to avoid putting their life at risk no matter how small the work is.
