Terminating the lifeline at both ends is a very critical part of lifeline installation. If this job is not done in the right manner then it is sure to put the users at a grave risk. There are different methods of terminating a wire rope / lifeline. However if the manufacturer is offering an EN795:2012 Type C certified system then it is mandatory to use a swageless termination as shown above. The standard clearly mentions that ‘U Bolt clamps shall not be used to terminate’. The risk of using such clamps is that over time there is a real possibility of the lifeline slipping out. It has been observed numerous times that due to price competition a few manufacturers use dog clamps / U clamps to terminate. Since the client is not aware of the requirements of EN795 standard they can be easily mislead. Our attempt is to educate our clients that if they are buying an EN certified system and the manufacturer shows them their certificate to that effect then the client should also be careful about the terminations being offered by the manufacturer / dealer because at the end of it all someone’s life depends on our decision. The price saving done by using dog clamps is too small compared to the risk taken by the purchaser to save his/her user’s life.
